Harmony Park Safari:  A federally licensed nature preserve of free-ranging exotic and endangered animals.  Remain in you car on a route to see zebras, zebus, antelope, buffalo, camel, ostriches, pythons, crocodiles.  431 Clouds Cove. 877-726-4625

Harrison Brothers Hardware:  Established in 1879, Alabama's oldest operating hardware store is operated by the Historic Huntsville Foundation.  Nostalgic items displayed and sold.  124 South Side Square, 536-3631.  http://www.harrisonbrothershardware.com/

Historic Districts:  Twickenham district north and east of the Courthouse Square contains the state's largest collection of antebellum homes, dating from 1814.  Old Town district contains Federal and Victorian homes.  Five Points contains many bangalows.  The railroad runs through Historic Downtown Madison.

Historic Huntsville Depot:  Guided tours of the restored 1860 passenger depot.  Civil War exhibits as well as period locomotives and other vehicles are featured.  320 Church Street.  256-564-8100 or

Huntsville Botanical Garden:  The 130 acre garden east of the Space and Rocket Center features gardens for roses, herbs, ferns, daylilies and aquatic plants.  Nature trails.  The Butterfly house is open seasonally.  4747 Bob Wallace Avenu.  256-830-4447.  http://www.hsvbg.org/

Huntsville Museum of Art:  The museum in Big Spring Park has a growing collection of prints, paintaings and sculptures.  Galleries feature touring exhibits and the museum's permanent collection.  300 Church Street.  256-535-4350.  http://www.hsvmuseum.org/

Lowry House:  An 1850's fully restored home on the National Register of Historic Homes.  1205 Kildare Street.  256-489-9200. 

Maple Hll Cemetery:  The city's historic cemetery dates from 1822 and contains the graves of five governors, Civil War soldiers and many civic leaders.  East of California Street.

North Alabama Railroad Museum:  Includes a restored depot and walk-through passenger tran.  Ride the Murcury and Chase Railroad.  694 Chase Road.  256-851-6276.

State Black Archives/Museum:  Chronicles African American achievements, the famed Buffalo Soldiers, and St. Bartley Church, the state's oldest black church.

Weeden House Museum:  Located in the Twickenham Historic District, the 1819 Federal house was the birthplace of 19th-century artist Maria Howard Weeden.  300 Gates Avenue.  256-536-7718.
